Crying over the show

Yup! That’s me … you may be wondering why my 15-year-old self was bawling my eyes out. Yes, I lost someone but technically I did not…

Well, here I am deeply invested in season 8 of Grey’s Anatomy listening to my FAVORITE characters last words to her soulmate Dr. Sloan; "Please, tell Meredith that I love her and that she was a good sister" (8) right before she dies due to injuries from the plane crash that just occured. Wheew i was crushed.

This scene affected me so much, I had to take a break from the show all together! But let’s start from the beginning.

Grey's Anatomy (7) is a show that came out in 2005 which uncovers the complex and hidden details of the characters personal life and work life inside and out of the hospital. It is currently streaming on ABC and renewing for season 21. The series Grey's Anatomy is so well-known around the world that the pilot episode alone drew approximately 17 million viewers! This series has a variety of fans ranging in ages from 18 to 34. With twenty seasons, 420 episodes, and three spin-off shows based around this one show. You may be wondering what it is about this one show that has everyone, including me, fascinated!

Fanatics through Art

One way the show's fandom shows its appreciation is through fanfiction. Fanfiction initially is fans writing stories built upon movies, tv shows, and way more. Its a way fans engage with their favorite fandom in meaningful and somewhat personal ways. These fans have a lively imagination powered from the show's plots and twists, they've united together on a website called Fanfiction (2) to express their love and ideas for the show. This website illustrates the fans special connection to the show; Each story created by fans has an alternate ending or what they would’ve wanted to happen in regard to the love triangles, the deaths, the characters developments, you name it.

Fan Art

Another way that fans demonstrate their love for the show is through fanart. Fanart allows the fans of Grey's Anatomy the ability to engage with the tv show. In the sense of expressing their creativity through drawings, paintings, portraits, coloring pages, and other works of art. A majority of fans create fanart to share their love and devotion for the show on a personal level to build such connection. While other fans create fanart to develop a sense of community, through sharing their artwork with other fans who are just as crazy as you about the show, it allows the fans to form connections.

Cosplay

The creativity truly shines within the fans throughout each season, Fans even go as far to cosplay their favorite characters or attend conventions. Cosplay is a another way Grey's Anatomy fans show how much they adore the show. This allows them to step into the roles of their favorite characters and temporarily escape their reality. Because the show and its characters impact the fans in such positive ways, fans have strong connections and attachments to the characters of the show. Cosplaying them allows fans chances to pay honor to the series. Here is an example of how fans cosplay their favorite character for multiple holidays or occasions in the video (6) below, in this case this girl is dressing like the main character Meredith Grey.

With regard to attending convention and or events, there are occasionally panels where fans can go vibe and ask questions to and about their favorite characters. This summer, there will actually be a reunion (3) featuring several of your favorite characters from the various shows that stemmed from Grey's Anatomy!
