More Than Just an RA
The buzzer on the door alerts everyone in the lobby of Luzerne Hall of a person walking into the building. Out of pure habit, the two RAs behind the front desk greet the newcomer with a warm smile and a polite, "Hello, how are you doing today?" Paris, one of the RAs from the fourth floor, and Kenni, one of the RAs from the third floor, were assigned desk duty for the night, so everyone who walks through the doors will be greeted with the same sentiments. Both RAs are clothed in sweats and loungewear, fitting for the late-night desk shift that will last until one o'clock in the morning. Notebooks, computers, and other study materials litter the top of the lobby desk, indicative of the two womens' other job as students. Even though they appear busy, either one of the RAs would drop everything to assist a resident should they require help. As Paris always tells her residents, "I'm here as a resource for you. If you need anything, come find me". Between countless lockouts, medical emergencies, and late-night "deep talks", Paris proves time and time again that she is always there for any one of her residents.

At around five-foot-six, Paris' appearance gives a welcoming and approachable vibe. She looks like every other student at Bloomsburg, which makes her easier to talk to than the other RAs and GHDs. Her body language is always casual and relaxed, and even her facial expressions are welcoming.
Julie, a resident of the fourth floor, reflects, "Paris is always willing to sit down and talk about anything with anyone. She will drop what she is doing and give you her full attention". Paris has become more than just an RA to the people living on the fourth floor, she is a confidant and mentor who looks out for the mini family she has created. Throughout the semester, she holds various floor activities or social gatherings to bring everyone together and check in with the residents. Each of these activities brings everyone out of their rooms and into the lounges. The events bring laughter to every corner of the floor.
Even though resident check-ins are mandatory for all of those who reside in the hall, Paris makes them feel like any normal conversation. Paris admits, "Check-ins are awkward for everyone involved. I want to make them more tolerable for everyone, so I try to make every talk more like a conversation between friends and not like an interview". Her consideration and understanding ensure that residents feel comfortable approaching her with any problems, creating an environment of trust and openness.
Not only has Paris proved her value as an RA, but she has fostered a unique dynamic on the fourth floor. Residents can almost always be found sitting in lounges studying together, watching a movie on a TV that was brought into the lounge, or just sitting around and chatting. Kacie, a resident who moved onto the floor from another building, voices, "The fourth floor is so different from my old dorm. Everyone on this floor is so friendly and I love that we all hang out together". Looking down the hallways, residents can be found sitting on the floor outside their rooms chatting or jumping from room to room, visiting each other. Paris' leadership has allowed her residents to form a community that would only be possible from her easygoing and calm demeanor.
